Domenico Ghirardelli started his career by providing groceries for the rush of gold prospectors. In 1852 he established the California Chocolate Manufactory, which quickly became a thriving business. The renovated Ghirardelli Square factory is a landmark for visitors who can watch chocolate being made the old-fashioned way and then stock up on Ghirardelli Bittersweet Chocolate and Unsweetened Cocoa.
